I was born in Jersey City, NJ in 1948 Three things seeded my intereset in aviation. The first was an old canvas hammock at my nearby aunt Mary’s house. What young chid doesn’t thrill to the sensation of seemingly launching up and off into midair with each more energetic forward pump? But it wasn’t so much the hammock that drew ny eyes skyward. It was its location, barely a mile and a half from the approach and of runway 22 left at Newark airport. My eyes traced the path of countless airliners that were about to land. My ears savored the unique sounds of those old radial engines throtting back as they neared touch down.
The second was an old RCA TV. O knew that if I persistently turned the knob back and forth through its three channels long enough, it eventually land on a channel that would emit the familiar sounds and sights I’d been so mesmerized by. Being a Baby-Boomer I became addicted to the never ending watershed of post WWII movies, but not just any war movies, aviation movies.
Chuck began flight training at age 16, soloing on November 27, 1964. He earned his Private Pilots’ license at age 17. With the onset of the Vietnam War, Chuck joined the Army Aviation program, training as a combat helicopter pilot. He was then selected to attend the Army Test Pilot program, after which he was deployed to Vietnam in 1968. Chuck flew more than 625 combat missions. He later piloted helicopters for a government agency which supported the NTSB, FAA, DEA, FBI, NASA, Secret Service and Marine One Presidential Helicopter Squadron. His awards include: 25 Air Medals with “V” for Valor, two Bronze Stars with “V” for Valor, commendations from the DEA, FBI, FAA, NASA and Marine One Squadron. Chuck was inducted into the NJ Aviation Hall of Fame in 2019.
